Spiritual seekers from all over world comes to Tiruvannamalai, an Pilgrimage city filled with living enlightenment gurus . This sacred city is Located 200 kilometer from Chennai. This ancient town has been built around Arunachala hill (annamalai hill), an mountain raising 4000 Meter heavenly from the ground. Tiruvannamalai is famous for sprawling temple arunachala temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Every full moon day people walk around the  annamalai hill and offer special prayers to Arunachala temple called Girivalam. Spiritual gurus Yogi Ramsuratkumar , Ramana Maharshi, Arabindo, Shesathiri  Swamigal , Muniyandi swamigal and many more saints and sadhus were living and still living here to bring the divine close to people.

Tiruvannamalai District Profile

Tiruvannamalai is the capital city of Tiruvannamalai district. In order to improve the Tamil Nadu government administration this district has been carved from North Arcot district on 1989. North and west of Tiruvannamalai is covered by Vellore, where the Southwest is by Krishnagiri District. Both Villupuram and kanchipuram are located in South and east side of Tiruvannamalai district respectively.

District total population is 2181856. During summer the temperature reach upto 34.93 Celsius. On winter (November,december and January) 19.36 Celsius  degree.

The spiritual Importance of Tiruvannamalai

The Hindu believes that Tiruvannamalai earns the pride of being the Neruppu (Agni) or light. Agni forms one of the five components that comprises the universe. The five components are:

  • Water
  • Fire
  • Air
  • Sky or the Ether

Hindu’s story often goes that Shiva assumed the form of a huge column of fire, whose origins Brahmma and Vishnu failed to trace

Tourist information

During the cool months from November to February tourist and spiritual guru seekers from all over the world especially from Europe, America and Australia come to Tiruvannamalai. Finding accommodation will be difficult  during this peak time and should be booked in advance (see travel guide to tiruvannamalai). The town has been recognized as a pilgrimage site by Tamil Nadu government tourism board,  so finding travel arrangements and accommodations wont be an issue for foreign tourists. There is lot of frequent public transportation from chennai airport.

As a holy city Tiruvannamalai has many ashrams built many different sadhus and spiritual gurus. The great Advaita Vedanta guru  sesadri swamigal, baghawan Ramana Maharshi found thier ashram at tiruvannamalai also Yogi Ramsuratkumar. These ashrams, arunachala, girivalam and sathanur dam are the main visiting place for Tiruvannamalai tourismRamana Ashram and Yogi Ramsuratkumar ashram both has an excellent meditation hall which often filled by prayers and spiritual presentation.
